Creative use of light and shadows as well as combining paint colors to create softer edges were also signatures of the form. The period immediately following the impressionist movement became known as the time of Post-impressionism. Post-Impressionism allowed for more diverse themes and details. The Surrealism artistic movement came shortly after that. Surrealism focused on the extreme. Surreal art often showed exaggerated forms and shapes which were designed to express conceptual or philosophical thoughts. The works of Salvador Dali are some of the most recognizable of the surreal artists.
