Because … Keep Reading → medieval art covers such a wide range of styles over a long period of time the form must be considered for its evolution as much as any unique characteristics. Much of the work of the medieval period is considered to be symbolic. Many of the early works featured disproportionate body parts, often with exaggerated heads on smaller bodies. The faces often had blank looks. There was usually little attention paid to depth perception. The symbolism was very apparent in the size of the characters. The more important figures were usually depicted as being larger. Some of these qualities started to change during the Gothic period when faces were often portrayed in a more realistic manner.
