The term modern art is typically used to describe art that was created from the mid part of the 19th century until around the 1970’s. The concept behind this “modern” movement was a breaking from some of the constraints of the more traditional styles of art. Artists like Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec were leaders in this movement with their bold use of colors and the emotional power of their works. The cubist movement, led by the works of Pablo Picasso was a significant part of the evolution of modern art. The manner in which these abstract symbols were used marked the most dramatic shift toward what would be called modern art. Other significant movements in modern art include Expressionism and Fauvism. The works of Picasso, as well as those of Marc Chagall and Edvard Munch are among the most influential.
