The history of the art of the Western world is usually discussed in terms of the period that the art came from. The discussion begins with the numerous works of art that came out of ancient Greece and Rome. The Renaissance era took those themes and others to new heights with the more realistic and lifelike images as well as more sophisticated use of lighting and depth. The art of the Baroque era went even further in its portrayal of drama and intensity. Neoclassicism brought a return to the less intense work of previous eras, but shortly after that the Modern art movement brought entirely new thinking as to what art could look like.
