The Big Bang Theory is often misstated as explaining how the universe started. In actuality, the theory attempts to explain everything that happened immediately after the universe was created. How that initial creation occurred is not explained by the theory. Since the theory originated in the 1920’s by George Lemaitre it has been modified, but not replaced as the prevailing theory on the formation of the universe.
