Key Greek figures included Eratosthenes, Heraclides, and Aristarchus. In 200 AD, Ptolemy advanced the Greek theories and created a complex model that placed the sun at the center of the universe. In the 17th century Galileo made significant discoveries including the moons of Jupiter and spots on the sun. He also supported the sun centered theory of Copernicus. In the 17th century Isaac Newton made significant contributions in the areas of gravity, calculus, and light theory. The last century of Astronomy has brought the Theory of Relativity by Einstein and The Big Bang Theory of the universe.
