There are six other dialects of Chinese that have large speaking populations as well. They are Wu, Yue (Cantonese), Min, Xiang, Gan Kejia, and Putonghua. Most Chinese can speak at least a little Mandarin, but speakers of Mandarin will often not be able to speak or understand any of the other dialects. One of the unique characteristics of the Chinese language is the importance placed on tones. Words can have different meaning based on the different tones.
