Forests and woodlands are terms that are often used interchangeably. They are both areas that are dominated by different forms of trees. Forests may be in very dry areas or areas that receive a lot of moisture such as the often discussed tropical rain forests. There is no universal system for classifying forests. They are usually categorized by the location they are in and the primary types of trees, growth, and weather conditions. Forests have often been affected by human intervention. The impact has been felt in both the development of forest areas as well as damage from events such as forest fires. Environmental groups often do battle with local governments to try to save forest and woodland areas.
