The Alps are the highest mountains in Europe and they also serve as the source of many of the rivers for the continent. Most of the continent of Europe is heavily populated. There are not many areas of untouched land. The northern part of Russia stands out as one of the few remote and sparsely populated areas. Russia is actually in two continents; with part of it being in Europe and part in Asia. Most of Europe is warmer than climates of similar latitude around the world. This is due to the Gulf Stream that brings warm air to the continent. In the areas near the Mediterranean the climate gets hotter.
