Most of the life forms in the history of the world have lived in the oceans. The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean in the world. It covers about 1/3 of the planet. The Arctic Ocean, which is located near the North Pole, is the smallest ocean on the planet. Seas are similar to oceans but much smaller. The largest sea is the Mediterranean Sea, which is about 1/5 the size of the smallest ocean. Seas are generally closer to land and much shallower than oceans. Because the floor of the seas is much closer to sunlight than the oceans it is easier for life to form at the bottom of the sea.
