In the United States alone, it would take huge numbers of cargo trains and large trucks to match the capacity of a single transport of connected barges. The majority of rivers and inland waterways in the United States are on the east coast of the country. The Mississippi River System, which includes the Mississippi river itself and many other rivers that flow from it, makes up the majority of all rivers in the country. There are some rivers and waterways on the west coast but many of those have been used to create dams that supply electric power.
