Both the history of the atmosphere as well as current conditions are analyzed to attempt to predict future events. While we are all familiar with the meteorologist that predicts the weather on a daily basis, other atmospheric scientists such as climatologists study patterns of weather changes over many years. This can be helpful in a number of areas including agriculture, planning appropriate land use, and evaluating long term concerns such as global warming.
