From the time of ancient Egypt, the presence of the Nile, which is the longest river in the world, has played a role in the formation and growth of the areas that surround the river. In the nineteenth century, the colonization of many African nations resulted in countries losing much of their identities. This lasted until well after World War II when the countries were able to gain back their independence. There has been much political turmoil and poverty in the years since; with many African countries still trying to figure out how to survive on their own.
