Even though Mesopotamia was ruled by kings, the structure allowed for participation and influence of local city-states. Such an environment didn’t exist in Egypt, where the Pharaoh’s ruled the land unequivocally. Because the Pharaoh was considered a descendant of God, large monuments were built in his honor. Ancient Mesopotamia was a more advanced society with a more complex writing system as well as greater achievement in science and astronomy. Egyptian society had some significant achievement in medicine, but the focus of the society was more on religion.
