It is estimated that the history of India dates back over 40,000 years. Much of the history of India has come from the numerous invasions that have taken place within the country. It is during this period over the next few hundred years that the caste system of India was formed. During the time around 400 BC the religion of Buddhism was started by Siddhartha Gautama. It wasn’t until much later that Islam would become popular in the country. By the mid-19th century much of India was under British control. The efforts of Gandhi in the early 20th century helped put an end to British rule. In 1947 India was once again a sovereign nation.
