Intellectual history is commonly looked at in the context of the environment from which the works came. Many different cultures, philosophies and political movements have been significant influences in the writings. From the early works of some of the classic Greeks such as Plato and Aristotle, to the writings of Confucius, to Machiavelli, to Karl Marx and more recently Hannah Arendt, the history of intellectual thought and writing is often inspired by the society from which it came.
