Native American History
The history of Native Americans is estimated to go back about 20 million years. It is speculated that they came from the area of Siberia and arrived in current day Alaska. The cooperation of the Native Americans was critical in helping the Europeans acclimate to the new land. The Europeans continued to come in large numbers and through their aggressive actions as well as the diseases that came with them, much of the Native American population was wiped out. Even after the formation of the United States, the situation didn’t improve. The Indian Removal Act led to brutal attacks and murder of large numbers of Native Americans. In 1876 the Native Americans were placed on reservations where they were required to live. The majority of Native Americans still live on these reservations. Native Americans were made full American citizens in 1924 but most are still very poor.
