While the working class was still poor, the middle class was presented with many new opportunities for economic as well as social advancement. The Victorian era was a time of great creativity and ingenuity in the United Kingdom. This was the time of Charles Darwin and his classic studies on evolution. Some of the greatest writers of any time came from this era; the Bronte sisters, Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll, and Charles Dickens to name just a few. The Victorian era has become known for the modesty and propriety of the time. Some say that this has been overstated, but the perception remains.
