The civil rights movement was operating in full force. President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that offered new protection and rights to minorities. By the end of the decade Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy had been assassinated and the Vietnam War was starting to be viewed as a mistake that was worsening by the day. The Six Days War that took place in the Middle East led to the expansion of Israel. This would mark the beginning of a new chapter in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
