Throughout history many careers have required an apprenticeship before allowing a person to be employed. The logic that for some jobs the only way to truly learn is by doing is as valid today as it ever was. This is very common in trade jobs such as electricians and plumbers. Colleges and universities often recognize the value of life experience. Many of them offer college credit and will excuse you from some college requirements if your life experience matches what the course teaches.
