The challenge in some situations is that lawyers have a responsibility to provide their clients with the best defense, but they also have a responsibility to uphold the law. At times, these two responsibilities may conflict. In such cases the rules of the bar association are supposed to offer guidance as to what actions are appropriate. Lawyers who don’t follow the rules as laid out are subject to sanctions including possible disbarment.
