Legal history is the study of the role of legal systems in societies and how it has changed over time. The various legal systems of different cultures often tell us a lot about how the rights of individuals were viewed. It is believed that the Roman Empire is the basis for most modern Civil Law societies. The Romans created extensive sets of rules that would be enforced by state representatives. The system of Common Law that was adopted by the United States is consistent with the beliefs that formed the country; namely that the branches of government should be separate. In Common Law each case is decided based on judicial interpretation of legislative statutes.
