An example is a reporter who doesn’t want to reveal the source of a story when law enforcement feels that that information would be useful or even critical to a legal proceeding. Courts have split on the issue depending on the specifics of the case. Another noteworthy subject that often brings the media and the law together is that of libel. This is when a media outlet is accused by an individual of making statements that are not true. One of the key determining factors in these cases is whether or not the person bringing the action was a public figure. If so, the burden of proof is much greater.
