These bird watchers are commonly called birders. Much is what is learned about different species of birds has come from amateur birders who have documented their findings in enough detail to be accepted by professional ornithologists. Most states in the United States, as well as foreign countries have organizations that can assist local birdwatchers. There are often lists of birds that are common to each area. Armed with some of these lists the avid birders can help to identify the birds that are commonly seen as well as the more rare sightings that may happen only occasionally.
