Evolution is defined as a process of change over time. We can speak of the evolution of language, or the evolution of technology, but the most common, and in some regard the most controversial, use of the word evolution relates to the evolution of species; particularly the human species. Over time mutations in DNA cause more dramatic changes. Mutations are often detrimental to a species and in those cases the species will become extinct over time. Occasionally the mutations produce qualities that make a species stronger and more suitable to its environment and those are the species that survive over time. This entire process of evolution is sometimes maligned because some people view it as contradictory to the teachings of organized religion.
