Genetics

Genetics is the scientific study of the composition of genes and how they are transferred between generations. The founder of genetics is considered to be Gregor Mendel. Mendel was a monk who lived in the 19th century. His experiments proved that organisms have specific traits that are dominant and recessive. It is these traits that determine … Keep Reading → what future generations of the species will be like. Mendel didn’t know he was describing the science of DNA; that was to come later. It is the DNA of an organism that contains the genetic code that defines who and what they are; and what traits they will pass on to future generations. The Human Genome Project has offered new hope that the study of genetics can be used to treat and prevent disease. The study which began in 1990 and lasted 13 years identified all of the genes in human DNA. The analysis of the project is ongoing and the results have been extremely encouraging.
