The purpose of paleontology is to use the evidence that is gathered to determine what the environment of the earth was like at that time and what has happened over time. By considering such factors as where fossils were found as well as their composition paleontologists are able to evaluate not only the evolution of the particular species being examined but also factors about the environment such as climate changes. This is helpful in determining the impact that changes in the environment had, which can be used to predict what changes may occur in the future.
