Linguistics is the field of science that studies all aspects of language and communication among humans. Linguistics seeks to answer many different questions about the manner and methods of communication. These are just a few of the many areas that linguistics looks at. There are several sub-categories of linguistics that focus on specific areas. An example is dialectology which looks at the variations that occur in languages based on regions. Another area of focus is historical linguistics which focuses on the way that language has changed over time. Neurolinguistics, which is an area that has gotten a lot of publicity, focuses on where in the brain language takes place. There are many other subgroups that make up the often complex subject of linguistics.
