Elementary number theory which is sometimes referred to as higher arithmetic is an example of number theory that is used to explain integer relationships in arithmetic calculations. More advanced areas such as algebra, geometry, and calculus allow number theory to be used to understand and explain more complex concepts. Some experts consider number theory to be a branch of applied mathematics because the work has so much practical application to other areas.
