They have the responsibility of making sure the patient is breathing properly and that the level of sedation is appropriate at all times during the procedure. The job of the anesthesiologist starts before the procedure. They must find out all relevant information about the patient including any allergies. They will then provide pre-operative instructions to the patient such as any medications to avoid and when to stop eating. The job of the anesthesiologist continues after the surgery as well. They must monitor the patient and provide the necessary medication to control post-operative pain.
