Doctors of internal medicine, or internists, specialize in a particular area of the body or type of disease. Internists may focus on areas such as gastrointestinal medicine, which treats issues of the digestive system; nephrology, which focuses on treatment of the kidneys; cardiology, which involves all heart related treatment; and many other … Keep Reading → specialized areas. Internists may have sub-specialties as well. While oncologists are internists that focus on cancer, pediatric oncologists will focus solely on cancer as it relates to children. Other areas of internal medicine have similar sub categories as well. Some internists will also serve as general practice or family physicians. Those doctors will be responsible for the general health of their patients as well as the specific area of their internal medicine focus. Internists may work in a hospital or may be employed as part of a private medical practice. Those doctors in private practice typically have one or more hospitals that they are associated with.
