History of Philosophy
The history of philosophical thought goes back close to 3000 years. It likely goes back further than that but our knowledge of earlier philosophers is limited by the written records of history. Some of the earliest known philosophers were the so called “pre-Socratics.” These include names perhaps more known for their contributions to … Keep Reading → mathematics such as Euclid and Pythagoras. Around the same time (6th century BC) the works of Confucius and Buddha were formulating their concepts of fairness and notions of the path to enlightenment. The next hundred years or so brought the legendary works of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. The Socratic method of questioning, Plato’s rationalism, and the early empiricism of Aristotle are all concepts that are still relevant today. The stoics, skeptics, and cynics were movements that came in the following years. The 17th century brought the era of modern philosophy with the work of Hobbes and Locke followed by the later work of Berkeley, Hume, and Kant. The existentialist movement is among the most noteworthy of 19th and 20th century philosophy.
