It is estimated that more than 20% of Americans suffer from some form of mental illness every year. Mental illness can take many forms and has a number of treatment options. There are eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa. All of these disorders and others represent a lot of possible mental illnesses that must be evaluated and treated. Many cases are not obvious and may be hard to diagnose. When properly diagnosed though, there are excellent treatment options. Psychotherapy may be prescribed. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers may all be appropriate choices depending on the situation. In some cases drug therapy will be recommended and a psychiatrist will be required to prescribe the medication and supervise the process. A number of forms of mental illness have been very responsive to drug therapy.
