Each society makes its own choices as to what the nature of the relationships will be among the participants of the society. These choices will be dictated by what qualities are most valued by the society. In prehistoric and even in ancient times physical strength was an advantageous and desired quality. Those that possessed that strength often held a loftier position in society because of it. In other societies one’s status is determined at birth depending on the family. Modern western society has its own value system for society. The qualities that societies value may change, but the concept that produces societies remains the same.
