The concept of celebrities and hero worship has been debated for many years. In most cases it is a harmless relationship between a fan and a famous person such as an athlete or actor. There are some cases though where the relationship becomes harmful. There have been cases of celebrities killed by crazed fans. The tragic murder of John Lennon is perhaps the most famous example. There have been other cases as well. The singer Selena and the actress Rebecca Schaeffer are two examples of young women tragically killed by people who supposedly idolized them. With the emphasis of the gossip magazines and other media outlets on celebrity problems it has become more challenging for celebrities to keep a reputation as a “perfect” role model. There is some value in this as it shows that celebrities are flawed just like everyone else. They can still be admired; for their talent.
