One of the earliest examples of this is the Abbott and Costello bit “Who’s on First.” It may seem tame compared to modern comedy, but the clever play on words is one of the best. Perhaps the comedian best known for his unique use of language was George Carlin. Carlin’s routine on the “7 words you can’t say on TV.” It was groundbreaking at the time and despite cable television changing the rules a bit it is still relevant and funny.
