Ten or twenty years ago rap and hip-hop music could have been considered alternative music; today it is firmly entrenched in the mainstream. Some of the most popular and most successful artists come from the hip-hop genre. The origin of alternative music is thought to have been in the 1960’s as a response to the hugely popular types of music that were dominating the radio. Alternative music has historically been based around the club scene. The music often has limited availability outside of live performances.
