R&B
Rhythm and Blues, which is normally referred to as R&B was originally named as a way to describe the popular music created by black recording artists. Early R&B artists such as Chuck Berry and Fats Domino would probably not be considered R&B artists today because the definition has changed a bit. The term R&B, while still primarily (though not … Keep Reading → exclusively) used to refer to black artists, also has a certain stylistic association. Rhythm and Blues is the music of smooth singers and beautiful voices. Singers such as Al Green, Teddy Pendergrass, Aretha Franklin, and more recently R. Kelly and Usher are artists that capture the spirit of R&B. It is the style and quality of the voice, rather than the color of the skin that creates an R&B artist. The term “blue-eyed soul” is sometimes used to refer to white artists who sing in the R&B style. Examples include Michael McDonald and Hall and Oates.
