Vinyl records come in speeds of 33, 45, and 78 rpm’s (revolutions per minute). The 78 was the biggest size but went out of style the earliest. The 33 and 45 remained, with the 45 being used for single songs and the 33 being used for longer albums. The problem with vinyl records as compared to cd’s is that the records are played by a needle touching the surface. This results in a less than perfect sound and ultimately damage to the record; though fans of the format say that they enjoy the imperfections.
