It is a participatory event that is typically learned not by formal training, but rather by watching and eventually dancing. Folk dancing, as a rule, is not big on innovation and improvisation. These are traditional dances and many people are offended if the traditional rules and steps of the dance are not followed. Most people are patient with new dancers learning; but a blatant attempt to change the dance will typically not be appreciated.
