In the years after the fall of the Roman Empire many of the performing arts stopped. Sometime after 900 the Christians, who had stopped all public performances, started allowing them again to celebrate Easter. Around 1500 the new performing art of ballet was introduced in Italy. About 100 years later the plays of Shakespeare were being performed. In 1730, Romeo and Juliet became the first Shakespeare play to be performed in America. The 20th century brought modern technology to the performing arts with innovations in film and television.
