The musical is one of the most popular forms of entertainment. People come from all over the world to New York City to attend Broadway musicals. The style of musicals that we know today has existed for less than a century. While Showboat in 1927 was one of the first shows to integrate a story with music, most experts point to Oklahoma in 1943 as the first show to include all of the elements of drama, dance, and music that are the hallmarks of modern musicals. Rodger’s and Hammerstein, who created Oklahoma, went on to write several other legendary shows. Examples include Carousel, South Pacific, and The Sound of Music. Stephen Sondheim would follow years later with classic musicals such as West Side Story and Gypsy. In recent years shows such as The Producers and Wicked have continued the great musical tradition.
