She became famous worldwide when Greta Garbo starred in a movie based on her life. Another well-known stripper was Josephine Baker, an American who became famous in Paris as a stripper in the 1920’s and 1930’s. The life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee was the subject of the movie and Broadway musical, Gypsy. Most of the early stripper didn’t strip completely. The idea was to seductively remove most clothing and leave the stage just before removing the last article of clothing. It was the classic seductive dance and compared to the striptease that is popular today it was quite tame.
