One of the more under-appreciated programming types on television is the mini-series. Perhaps it is because a number of mini-series have been awful that we sometimes forget just how good the best of the genre can be. One of the best examples of this is Roots, based on the book by Alex Haley. Roots was at once upsetting, frightening, and uplifting. Band of Brothers is another outstanding mini-series. The powerful tale of World War II Infantry Regiment is as good as the best war movies ever made. There must be something about war that makes great mini-series because two others come to mind as well. The Winds of War, based on the Herman Wouk novel and the amazing tale of the Civil War, North and South are both spectacular viewing experiences. Others such as Shogun and Lonesome Dove deserve mention as well. For those that haven’t seen these series they should find copies to watch.
