Beer is made from four basic ingredients; hops, yeast, water, and malted barley. What makes them different is the way in which those ingredients are combined and any additional ingredients that are added. Most types of beer fall under the large categories of Ales or Lagers. The primary difference is that the yeast in lagers ferments at cooler temperatures than the yeast in ales. Because of this lagers tend to lighter than the bolder flavored ales.
