A similar product that contains sugar or other flavorings is referred to as a liqueur. Spirits are often referred to by the amount of alcohol content that they contain. The common term is “proof,” which is arrived at by doubling the alcohol by volume of the beverage. So a drink that is 40% alcohol by volume would be referred to as 80 proof. Some of the popular spirits are gin, vodka, tequila and the many variations of whiskey.
