Many foods that we prepare can benefit from some outer layer that can be used either to add flavor, protect the food underneath from heat or oil, or both. Examples of dry coatings include certain cheeses such as parmesan as well as bread crumbs. Other items such as corn flakes or oatmeal may also be used. These are often baked and add a layer of flavor and texture to the food. A batter is simply another type of wet coating. Examples of batters include beer batters, which add beer to flour and seasonings, and Tempura batter, which is made from just flour and water.
