Other producers of meat and poultry may use their own versions of what the industry calls meat or poultry “product extenders.” Products such as sausages and hot dogs use many types of “fillers” in the preparation of the product. It is often not clear what the fillers are made from. Other items such as phosphates and water are among the ingredients that are commonly added to different types of meat and poultry. It can be very challenging trying to determine exactly what ingredients have been used in our food.
