For a variety of reasons, people sometimes need (or choose) to be on restricted diets. The dietary restrictions may be due to health reasons or, in some cases, due to cultural or religious beliefs. These diets emphasize eating healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables and limiting unhealthy foods such as those high in fat, cholesterol, and sodium. Another example would be the diabetic diet, which closely monitors ingredients such as sugar and carbohydrates. An example of a specific dietary restriction would be no dairy products for someone who is lactose intolerant. Similarly there are foods such as nuts and shellfish that many people are allergic to and must avoid. Dietary restrictions based on cultures and religions are found all over the world. The nature of the restrictions varies considerably according to the respective beliefs.
