There are several reasons for this; the primary one being that the expense of the equipment is often not affordable for the small farmer. These small farms often rely on more manual labor and less machinery. Larger farms often employ large tractor based equipment. When possible it is beneficial for farmers to engage in sustainable agricultural practices. This involves focusing on products that can thrive in the local environment. It often reduces the need for fertilizer and pesticides. Add the fact that sustainable agriculture is often utilized locally and the total cost of production and distribution can be significantly reduced. Yet another benefit is that the land is being treated more gently and will presumably remain viable for a much longer period of time.
